The Joyce Brakebill Theatre Scholarship
If your “Given Circumstances” are:
- I am a high school senior or transfer student applying to UT
- I have excellent academic ability
- I have a passion for theatre
- I have a talent for performance, design, or technical theatre
- I have experience making theatre
- I am highly motivated to succeed in my career and contribute to society
And your “Objective” is:
- To study theatre in a broad-based liberal arts curriculum while working in a nationally recognized professional theatre…
Then your “Action” should be to apply for:
The Brakebill Scholarship is a non-renewing scholarship specifically for incoming theatre students. The dollar amount of the scholarship can range between $500 – $2000. While this scholarship does not renew, there are many other department scholarships that students can apply for once they are on campus. Most theatre students who apply for department scholarships receive some level of financial aid. Receiving this scholarship does not impact on a student’s eligibility to receive other University aid.
Opportunities for Returning Students
If you are a theatre major, minor, or MFA student and are interested in scholarship opportunities, please fill out the application below. Any student interested MUST fill out the form with the required attachments by March 31st (awards apply to the following academic year). Questions can be emailed to: Department of Theatre Main Office Staff.
UT Scholarship Opportunities
Visit the University of Tennessee Financial Aid Office website for more scholarship opportunities. Additionally, first-year students who apply for admission by December 15 of their senior year in high school will be automatically considered for institutional scholarships. In some cases an on-time FAFSA is also required. While these scholarships are not applicable to transfer students, we have a variety of scholarships available to UT transfer students.
Work Study
Work Study positions are available in the Department of Theatre. Students who are eligible for work study and are interested in theatre are strongly encouraged to explore the possibilities of working for the Clarence Brown Theatre or the Department of Theatre. When filling work study positions, preference is given to Theatre majors. For more information contact Susan McMillan.
How do I apply for Federal Work Study?
Students apply for Federal Work Study on the same form that they complete for Federal Aid. One of the questions on the form (#28) asks if the student will be interested in student employment, the answer should be “yes” if you would like to be awarded FWS. Of course, funds are limited; therefore, those submitting the FAFSA before the priority deadline will have the greatest chance of being awarded. Once you have completed the form, notify the production manager and/or the area head for the department or shop where you are interested in working.
At the beginning of each term report to the Financial Aid Office with your social security card and UT ID to fill out the appropriate paperwork to be placed in a position. You will be paid bi-weekly, electronically deposited into your bank account. If you do not have a bank account, your paycheck will be mailed to your home address.
